ราชบัณฑิตยสถานได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของภาษาท้องถิ่นเป็นอย่างยิ่ง จึงได้รวมเรื่องภาษาท้องถิ่นไว้ในนโยบายภาษาแห่งชาติ นอกจากนี้ยังได้จัดตั้งคณะกรรมการเกี่ยวกับภาษาและวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นขึ้นมา 6 ชุด รวมทั้งกรรมการจัดระบบการเขียนภาษาที่ยังไม่มีระบบการเขียน และจัดทำระบบการถอดอักษรภาษาท้องถิ่นเป็นอักษรโรมันเพื่อนำเสนอต่อองค์การระหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยการมาตรฐาน (ISO) ต่อไป
Dialects and indigenous languages have been given a great deal of attention by the Royal Institute of Thailand. They have been included prominently in the National Language Policy, and six committees deal with languages and literatures of the northern, southern, and Isan (northeastern) regions of the country. In addition, writing systems have been developed for several indigenous languages, and principles have been established for alphabets of some major Tai languages so that they can be proposed to the ISO.
